I FOUND THIS AT A NOW DEFUNCT (DEMOLISHED) FLEA MARKET IN COLUMBUS IN 2003. IT HAD A $45 PRICE TAG ON IT, SO I PASSED. A FEW MONTHS LATER, IT WAS STILL THERE, SAME PRICE, NOW WITH A NECKED CRT. I LEFT A MESSAGE FOR THE VENDOR THAT I WOULD OFFER $25 SINCE THE TUBE WAS BROKEN. ABOUT A MONTH LATER, IT WAS MINE.
AT THE FOLLOWING ETF CONVENTION, I SCORED A 12LP4 CRT (PHILCO BRANDED) WITH A YOKE AND FOCUS ASSEMBLY WHICH WAS AN EXACT REPLACEMENT IF NEEDED. I ALSO GOT THE SAMS FOLDER FOR THIS.
I SOFT STARTED THIS AND ALL I GOT WAS STATIC FROM THE SPEAKER. I WAS NOT RECEIVING STATIONS AND GOT NO RASTER. WITH ALL THE MICAMOLDS AND BUMBLEBEE CAPS, I WAS NOT SURPRISED. ONE OF THE CANS GOT A LITTLE TOO WARM FOR COMFORT. I RECAPPED THIS IN THE SUMMER OF 2004.
KEEP IN MIND WHEN GETTING A SAMS FOR THESE, THE RUN NUMBER IS VERY IMPORTANT. ONE RUN HAS A DIFFERENT POWER SUPPLY THAN THE OTHER. IGNORE THE PIC ON THE FOLDER.
THE 5U4 RECTIFIER WAS MISSING AND FOUR OTHER TUBES WERE BAD. THIS USES LOCTALS, WHICH WERE USED ONLY BY PHILCO. FORTUNATELY, MINE WERE GOOD.
TOP OF CHASSIS BEFORE ANY RESTORATION. THE HIGH VOLTAGE CAGE WAS REMOVED FOR PHOTO PURPOSES. THIS WAS NOT KEPT IN GOOD CONDITIONS. I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO RISK RUST REMOVAL. THE HIGH VOLTAGE CAGE AND POWER TRANSFORMER WERE REPAINTED. I JUST CLEANED IT AS BEST AS I COULD.
BOTTOM OF CHASSIS BEFORE RESTORATION. WITH ALL THE BUMBLEBEE CAPS, MICAMOLDS AND WAX/PAPER CAPS, IT'S A WONDER I EVEN GOT STATIC. THESE CAPS ARE ALL EVIL, LIKE DICK CHENEY. I RESTUFFED THE ELECTROLYTIC CANS. GIVEN THE CONDITIONS THIS WAS KEPT UNDER, I'M SURPRISED I DIDN'T FIND ANY UNDESIRABLES, OTHER VERMIN OR GEORGE W. BUSH.
CHASSIS AFTER RECAPPING.
I WAS HAVING HORIZONTAL ISSUES. IT WAS WAY OFF FREQUENCY AND I THOUGHT I HAD NO HIGH VOLTAGE.
IN A DARK ROOM I WAS ACTUALLY GETTING AN IMAGE. THE HORIZONTAL OSCILLATOR WAS OFF FREQUENCY. A POSTER AT AUDIOKARMA SUGGESTED CHANGING MICAS IN THE OSCILLATOR. I DID. NO CHANGE.
AFTER TAKING A BREAK FROM THIS, I PICKED UP AGAIN. I HEARD A LOUD POP AND HAD A REDPLATING 5U4. EITHER THE YOKE OR FOCUS COIL SHORTED. I USED THE EXTRA ONE AND PICKED UP AGAIN. I STILL HAD SOUND, BUT NO PICTURE.
I DECIDED TO EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT ION TRAPS. I GOT A NICE BRIGHT PICTURE WITH A DIFFERENT TRAP. I THINK THE MAGNETS IN THE OLD ONE GOT WEAK. NOW, I COULD ADJUST THE HORIZONTAL OSCILLATOR.
THE FINE TUNING WAS OFF. WBNS WAS FINE, BUT I HAD NO SOUND ON WCMH OR THE ABC STATION. ADJUSTING EACH CHANNELS LOCAL OSCILLATOR SOLVED THAT.
CHASSIS AFTER RUST REMOVAL AND REPAINTING. DURING RESTORATION. ONE LUG ON THE VOLUME CONTROL BROKE OFF AND THERE WAS NO FIXING IT. I GOT A REPLACEMENT AT A LOCAL PARTS HOUSE, BUT THE SHAFT WAS TOO SHORT. I CUT THE SHAFT OFF THE ORIGINAL AND USED A QUARTER INCH COUPLING FROM AN AUTO PARTS STORE. IT LOOKS ORIGINAL WITH THE KNOB ON.
I THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE TO REFINISH THE CABINET. INSTEAD, I USED CITRUS CLEANER AND IT BROUGHT THE FINISH BACK. NEW MOUNTING FEET WERE PURCHASED FROM A HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE.
A QUICK SHOT BEFORE REASSEMBLY. THIS WAS ON THE 12LP4.
