17" TABLETOP

I AM DOING SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT HERE.  BOTH OF THESE SETS USE THE SAME CHASSIS.  I WILL DOCUMENT THE RESTORATIONS OF BOTH ON THIS PAGE, BUT I WILL NOTE INDIVIDUAL ITEMS SEPARATELY.

I SCORED THE CONSOLE IN 2005 AND THE TABLETOP IN 2009.  THE CRT IN THE TABLETOP WAS TOTALLY DEAD.  I THINK SOMEONE BLASTED IT WITH A PRIMITIVE REJUVENATOR AND KILLED THE TUBE.  THE OTHER TUBE WAS GOOD.

IN BOTH CASES ALL PLASTIC AND WAX CAPS WERE REPLACED.  THE ELECTROLYTICS WERE ALSO REPLACED.  BOTH SETS HAD QUESTIONABLE REPAIRS DONE IN THE PAST.  FUSES WERE ADDED TO THE POWER SUPPLIES AFTER THE LOW VOLTAGE RECTIFIERS.

CONSOLE:  THERE WAS A GANG OF RESISTORS IN SERIES IN THE AUDIO CIRCUIT.  THIS WAS REPLACED WITH THE PROPER VALUE AND WATTAGE.  THERE WAS A WIRE CUT WITH TAPE ON IT.  IT WAS NOTED THE CONNECTION WAS MADE ELSEWHERE.  WHEN I FOUND THAT CONNECTION, I CLIPPED THIS WIRE.  THE AUDIO OUTPUT TRANSFORMER IS NOT ORIGINAL.  I LEFT IT IN PLACE SINCE IT WORKS.

TABLETOP:  THERE WERE RESISTORS ADDED IN THE VERTICAL SECTION AND DAMPER CIRCUIT.  THESE CIRCUITS WERE RETURNED TO PRINT SPECS.

A QUICK TOP VIEW.  THIS IS THE CONSOLE CHASSIS.  NOTE THE BIG CLUNK TUNER.  THE GREEN KNOB IS FOR COURSE TUNING.  THIS GETS IT CLOSE, THE FINE TUNING GETS IT EXACT.  THIS WAS COMMON FOR ZENITH OF THIS ERA.  IF YOU WERE IN A UHF MARKET, YOUR ZENITH DEALERS COULD INSTALL UHF STRIPS.  THERE WAS SPACE FOR TWO IN THESE TUNERS.  ON BOTH SETS, THE FINE TUNING STRING WAS BROKEN.  I REPLACED THEM WITH FISHING LINE.

BOTH CHASSIS AFTER RECAPPING.  IN BOTH CASES, I DID NOT RESTUFF THE CANS DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE REPLACEMENTS.  BOTH RECAPS WERE OTHERWISE UNEVENTFUL, BUT THERE WAS ONE ISSUE...

TABLETOP:  THINGS LOOKED GOOD ON THE 5AXP4 TEST TUBE.  WHEN I INSTALLED THE DONOR 17BP4, WE HAD WIDTH ISSUES.  I WAS GETTING JUST UNDER 10kv AT THE ANODE.  I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLOSER TO 12kv.  I DISCOVERED TWO NEAR DEAD HORIZONTAL OUTPUT TUBES AND A DAMPER THAT WAS THE SAME.  REPLACING THESE TUBES DID NOTHING.  I FOUND RESISTORS IN THE DAMPER CIRCUIT NOT SHOWN IN THE PRINT.  I REMOVED THEM AND THAT SOLVED THE WIDTH ISSUE.  A SIMILAR SITUATION  IN THE VERTICAL SECTION HAPPENED TOO.  THIS IS NOW BACK TO PRINT SPECS.

BOTH:  I THINK THERE IS A MISPRINT IN THE SAMS.  IT IS C62 IN THE VERTICAL SECTION.  THIS CAP SHORTED OUT TWICE IN THE CONSOLE.  I THINK THEY GOT THE VOLTAGE RATING WRONG.  I WOULD USE A 1000 VOLT RATED CAP HERE.

AND, NOW FOR SOME SHOTS OF BOTH SETS.
